Tips for Natural Couple Photos

Forget posing: how to get photos where you truly recognise yourselves.

“We're just not photogenic.” I hear that sentence in almost every first conversation – and it's almost never true. Most couples only feel stiff in front of the camera because they think they have to pose. Yet the most beautiful couple photos happen when you simply are yourselves.

Here are my most important tips to help you feel at ease during your session – whether it's for your engagement, your anniversary or just because.

1. Focus on each other, not on the camera

Go for a walk, hold hands, tell each other how you met. I'll give you little prompts – “Whisper your favourite food into each other's ear” or “Walk to that tree and back without letting go” – and real looks and real laughter follow all by themselves.

2. Movement is your friend

Standing still is the hardest thing for most people. When you move, your body relaxes and the pictures gain a lightness. A twirl, jumping over a puddle together, a kiss on the forehead while walking – it all looks more natural than any rehearsed pose.

3. Clothes you feel good in

Wear something that suits you and that you can move in comfortably. A few rules of thumb:

  • Harmonious colours rather than matching outfits, for example beige, cream, olive green or muted blue.
  • Plain fabrics rather than big logos or fine, flickering patterns.
  • Shoes you can also walk across a meadow in.
  • A second outfit in the car never hurts.

4. The right place and the right time

Choose a place that means something to you – the park of your first date, your favourite café or the mountain where you got engaged. I usually suggest the hour before sunset: the light is warm and soft and flatters every skin type.

You don't need to know how to pose. You only need to know why you're here – together.

5. Feeling nervous is completely normal

The first ten minutes almost always feel a little unusual. That's okay. I take time for you to settle in and show you a few pictures on the camera screen along the way. By then at the latest you'll see how good you look together – and the tension is gone.

Fancy a couple session? Tell me about yourselves – I'm looking forward to capturing your story in pictures.
